1. The Estimation Station All ages

Builds number sense. Engages even the shyest learners.

Materials

How it works

  1. Each person writes their estimate for how many objects in a jar.
  2. At the end, reveal the actual count. Closest estimate wins a small prize.
  3. Encourage strategies: "How many in one corner? Multiply."

2. Dice Wars Grade 1-4

Practices addition and subitizing in a fun, fast way.

Materials

How it works

  1. Two players each roll two dice and add.
  2. The higher sum wins a point.
  3. Best of 10 rolls. Variations: subtract instead, or multiply (Grade 3+).

3. Build the Number Grade 1-4

Place-value practice with hands-on blocks.

Materials

How it works

  1. Draw a number card.
  2. Build the number with the fewest blocks.
  3. Bonus: write the expanded form on paper.

4. Pattern Detective Grade 1-3

Recognizes core in repeating patterns.

Materials

How it works

  1. Show a partly-finished pattern.
  2. Family completes the next 5 terms together.
  3. Discuss the rule.

5. Probability Bag Pulls Grade 3-6

Compares experimental and theoretical probability.

Materials

How it works

  1. Before any pulls, families guess: "What's the probability of red?"
  2. Pull, record, replace, repeat 30 times.
  3. Compare experimental fractions to predictions.

6. Geometry Scavenger Hunt All ages

Connects math vocabulary to the world.

Materials

How it works

  1. Walk around the gym/halls to find each item.
  2. Record where and what.
  3. Share favourites at the closing.

7. Cookie Math Grade 4-7

Fractions and ratios in the real world (snack form).

Materials

How it works

  1. "What fraction of cookies are chocolate-chip?" Simplify it.
  2. "What's the ratio of chocolate-chip to oatmeal?"
  3. "If we share fairly with our family of 4, how many cookies each?"
  4. Eat the answer.

8. Mental Math Lightning Round Grade 5-8

Builds fluency under low-stakes pressure.

Materials

How it works

  1. One adult and one student face off.
  2. Each gets 1 minute to answer as many cards as possible.
  3. Friendly trash talk encouraged.
