Welcome to Grade 7 French!
This year your child will move from beginner to lower-intermediate French. By June, they should be able to communicate confidently in writing and speaking about familiar topics, using five different verb tenses.

Cultural figures your child will meet
- Capitaine Chénier (fictional Patriote drummer-boy, U2)
- Louis-Joseph Papineau & George-Étienne Cartier (U2-U3, real Canadian historical figures)
- Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (author of Le Petit Prince, U4)
- Henri Bourassa (founder of Le Devoir newspaper, U5, and Papineau's grandson!)
- Léopold Sédar Senghor (first president of Senegal, U6)
- AĂŻsha (fictional Senegalese pen-pal, U6/U7/U9/U10)
- David Suzuki, Steven Guilbeault, Élise Gravel (Canadian environmental heroes, U7)
- Mikael Kingsbury, Marie-Philip Poulin (Canadian Olympic gold medalists, U8)
- Cirque du Soleil, Denys Arcand, Stromae (modern francophone arts, U9)
Assessment
Each unit ends with:
- A test (40 marks + 2 bonus) covering Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing
- A cheat sheet (6 panels) which is given to students BEFORE the test as a study aid
The Unit 10 BILAN doubles to 80 marks and reviews everything from the year.
How you can support at home
You don't need to speak French. Here's what helps:
- Quiz the cheat sheet before each test. Even just reading the headings together helps.
- Watch a French film or show together : Le Petit Prince animated film (2015), or a documentary on Radio-Canada (try the Tou.tv app, free in Canada).
- Listen to French music : Charlotte Cardin, Stromae, Cœur de pirate are great starter artists.
- Encourage them to keep writing in French even casually, a sentence in their journal, a text to a French-speaking friend, a Duolingo streak.
- Celebrate small wins. Saying "I'm proud of you for trying" in any language carries.
What if my child is struggling?
- The cheat sheet is the single best study tool. It's deliberately compact (one page, six panels) so students can review the whole unit in under 10 minutes.
- The interactive activities online (the platform) include immediate-feedback exercises that help reinforce grammar without pressure.
- The time-tracking system built into the platform discourages rushing, students must spend a minimum amount of time on activities before moving on.
- Reach out to me directly at any point if your child is feeling overwhelmed or losing confidence. Early conversations are easier than late ones.
What if my child is excelling?
- The extension panel in each cheat sheet has links to authentic French content (Radio-Canada, TFO, RFI Afrique, French books and films).
- Encourage them to apply for French Immersion at the Grade 9 level if your school board offers it.
- Sign them up for Concours d'art oratoire (regional French speech contest), students from Core French routinely place well.
- Look into summer French immersion programs (Explore, Destination Clic), federally subsidized for some students.
Looking ahead to Grade 8
Next year your child will:
- Master the conditional and subjunctive moods
- Read longer authentic texts (book excerpts, news articles)
- Discuss 20th-century French and Canadian history (World Wars, Quiet Revolution)
- Write structured argumentative essays
- Reach CEFR level B1 (independent communication)
